Favicon sizes: what each one is for
| Size | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| 16 × 16 | Browser tabs and bookmarks on standard screens |
| 32 × 32 | Tabs on high-density screens, the Windows taskbar |
| 48 × 48 | Windows desktop shortcuts and site icons. Google Search asks for a favicon that is a multiple of 48 px, such as 48, 96 or 192 |
| 64 to 256 | Large Windows icons; 256 × 256 is the largest size an ICO file can hold |
| 180 × 180 | Apple touch icon, shown when a site is added to an iPhone or iPad home screen |
| 192 × 192 and 512 × 512 | Android home screen and installable web apps, listed in site.webmanifest |
What is an ICO file?
ICO is the icon format Windows introduced and browsers adopted for favicon.ico. One file can hold several images of different sizes, so the browser or the operating system picks the one that fits best. This converter stores each size as PNG data inside the ICO, which every current browser and Windows Vista or later can read, and keeps transparency intact.
Is it private?
Yes. The image is decoded, resized and packed by JavaScript running in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and once the page has loaded the conversion needs no network connection.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.
What sizes should a favicon.ico contain?
16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 pixels cover tabs, bookmarks, the Windows taskbar and shortcuts. Add 64, 128 or 256 pixels for a sharp Windows icon.
Can I convert JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or SVG to ICO?
Yes. Any image your browser can open works. An SVG is drawn again at each size, so small icons stay crisp.
Is transparency kept?
Yes for PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG. A JPG has no transparency, so you can fill the background with a colour under More options.
Do I still need a favicon.ico?
It is a good fallback. Browsers, feed readers and crawlers still ask for /favicon.ico when a page does not declare an icon. Add PNG icons with link rel="icon" for sharper results in modern browsers.
What is in the favicon pack?
favicon.ico, 16 and 32 pixel PNGs, apple-touch-icon.png (180×180), Android icons at 192 and 512 pixels, a site.webmanifest starter and a text file with the HTML to paste into your page head.
Why does my icon look blurry?
The source is probably smaller than the size you picked, or it is not square. Start from a square image of at least 256×256 pixels, or from an SVG.
