About WordPress Password Hashing
WordPress uses the PHPass library for password hashing, which implements the OpenBSD-style Blowfish-based bcrypt.
Hash Format:
$P$B55D6LjfHDkINU5wF.v2BuuzO0/XPk/
- $P$ - Identifies PHPass portable hash
- B - Cost parameter (rounds = 2^count)
- 55D6LjfH - Salt (8 characters)
- Remaining - Hashed password
Security Features:
- Salted hashes prevent rainbow table attacks
- Multiple rounds of hashing (default: 8192)
- Backwards compatible with older WordPress versions
- Automatically upgrades MD5 hashes when users log in
